2027 Edmonton Expos Baseball - Head Coach & Assistant Coach Recruitment

Edmonton Expos Baseball is seeking qualified Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches for the upcoming season.

The Edmonton Expos are committed to developing skilled, confident athletes who love the game of baseball. We are looking for coaches who demonstrate a passion for the sport, strong leadership and communication skills, and a commitment to athlete development both on and off the field.

Successful candidates will prioritise long-term player development over winning, foster a positive and inclusive team culture, and model the sportsmanship, respect, and integrity we want to see in our athletes.

Head Coach Responsibilities

The Head Coach leads the team throughout the season and creates an environment where athletes can develop their skills, knowledge, confidence, and love for the game.

Responsibilities include:

  • Team Leadership: Organise and lead all team practices, games, and tournaments throughout the season.
  • Player Development: Plan and deliver effective practices that develop individual skills, baseball knowledge, and overall team play, emphasising development over winning.
  • Assistant Coach Leadership: Recruit and recommend up to two assistant coaches, subject to Club approval, and provide leadership, mentorship, and direction to the coaching staff.
  • Communication: Maintain open, respectful, and timely communication with players and their families, including providing regular, constructive feedback to support player growth and confidence.
  • Positive Team Culture: Model and promote respectful conduct toward players, families, opponents, umpires, and fellow coaches.
  • Safety and Inclusion: Foster a safe, inclusive, supportive, and positive environment where all athletes can learn, compete, and enjoy the game.
  • Club Collaboration: Participate in meetings with Club representatives, parents, and the Board of Directors as required. Collaborate with the Club's technical director or designate on season planning and team development.
  • Policy Compliance: Ensure all coaching activities comply with Club policies, league rules, and Baseball Alberta and Baseball Canada requirements.
  • Additional Opportunities: Contribute to Club development initiatives and clinics where appropriate, based on personal expertise and availability.

Assistant Coach Responsibilities

Assistant Coaches work collaboratively with the Head Coach to support team operations and athlete development.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with planning and delivering practices, games, and tournaments.
  • Support individual player development, skill instruction, and team strategy.
  • Help maintain a positive, safe, inclusive, and respectful team environment.
  • Communicate professionally with athletes, families, and fellow coaches.
  • Follow all Club policies, league rules, certification requirements, and athlete safety expectations.

The Head Coach will recommend Assistant Coaches, who are subject to Club approval. If you're interested in being an Assistant Coach, we will forward your info to the selected head coaches.

Qualifications and Requirements

All Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches must:

  • Meet and maintain the coaching certification and training requirements established by Baseball Alberta and the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), as applicable to their role.
  • Complete the required Respect in Sport and Making Ethical Decisions training and evaluations applicable to their coaching position.
  • Provide a satisfactory police information check, including any required vulnerable sector check, before interacting with athletes.
  • Comply with all Edmonton Expos Baseball, league, Baseball Alberta, and Baseball Canada policies and requirements.
  • Comply with the Zone 6 Edmonton Expos Anti-Bullying and Reporting Policy, including completing required training, promptly reporting incidents of bullying, harassment, or misconduct, and cooperating with any resulting investigation.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, strong communication skills, and a commitment to athlete safety and development.

All required certifications and training must be completed and verified by the Club before honorarium payments can be issued.
Failure to meet these requirements may result in suspension or termination of the coaching appointment.

Time Commitment

Coaches must be prepared to commit to the demands of the season, including practices, games, tournaments, and team-related responsibilities.

  • Pre-season: Approximately 10-20 hours per week. Head Coaches will collaborate with the Club's technical director or designate on season planning and assist with recruiting assistant coaches.
  • Regular season: Approximately 20-30 hours per week. Coaches are expected to attend scheduled practices, games, and tournaments. Actual hours will vary according to the team schedule.
  • Playoffs and post-season: Additional commitments may be required depending on team qualification, tournament schedules, and league requirements.

Schedules will be determined in coordination with the Club and applicable league requirements.

Honorarium and Compensation

Coaching honoraria are intended to recognise the time, leadership, and commitment required to support Edmonton Expos athletes throughout the season.

Head Coach: The 2027 Head Coach Agreement provides an honorarium based on experience. It is paid in four monthly instalments from May through August, subject to the agreement's terms, satisfactory fulfilment of responsibilities, completion of required certifications, and return of Club equipment.

Assistant Coaches: The 2027 agreement provides an honorarium based on experience for up to two assistant coaches. The Head Coach determines the allocation between assistant coaches, subject to Club approval and the applicable agreement terms.

Honorarium amounts and payment terms for future seasons will be confirmed by the Club.

Conduct and Accountability

All coaches are expected to uphold the values and standards of Edmonton Expos Baseball and to contribute to a culture of respect, accountability, and continuous development.

Coaches must protect confidential player and family information, follow applicable privacy requirements, report incidents or injuries to the Club promptly, and comply with all applicable Club and governing-body policies.

Coaching appointments and honoraria are subject to the terms of the applicable coaching agreement. Failure to fulfil coaching responsibilities, maintain required certifications, or comply with Club policies may result in suspension or termination.
