Boundary and Release Changes

The Pathway to AAA
EABA Angels, SJP Blue Jays and SWEMBA White Sox have entered an agreement with the Edmonton Expos as the home AAA association for these three associations.

Current BA transfer rules indicate that if you've been an Expos for the past two seasons,  Edmonton Expos is considered your home association. You will require a release to try out for another association at the AAA level.

If you do not make an Edmonton Expos AAA team for the 2026 season, you may try out for other AAA programs or return back to your home association for AA tryouts.

Expos Transfer Request Protocol
If you're requesting a transfer to play for another association's AAA team, an application to the Expos is required. Please see our transfer protocols here

18U AAA/BAEL Lateral Transfer Change

Baseball Alberta will no longer recognise the 18U AAA League and the Baseball Alberta Elite League as a lateral transfer. In order to stay consistent through all categories of play and in an effort to align the transfer process throughout the Province. It was determined that the removal of the lateral transfer between the two leagues was a logical step to ensure that the top 18U players in the province have the opportunity to evaluate and be rostered in the top 18U league in the province. Associations may still provide their own internal rostering policies around imports.

BAEL & BAEL - lateral transfer

BAEL & 18U AAA - no lateral transfer

BAEL & 18U AA - no lateral transfer

18U AAA & 18U AAA - lateral transfer

18U AAA & 18U AA - no lateral transfer

Please look at the Schedule (Notes section) in TeamLinkt to find your assigned group. Athletes will be placed in either tryout session #1 or #2. Athletes may be released from the tryout process after the first weekend. Tryout sessions #3 and #4 are invite-only.

Evaluation Process

The evaluation process is designed to allow for a fair assessment of each athlete’s baseball ability with the ultimate goal of forming the best team for the AAA level.

During the tryouts, athletes will be evaluated on the following skills: Infield, Outfield, Pitcher, Catcher, Hitting, Speed and CHARACTER!

Athletes will be scored using both quantitative and qualitative measures.

Quantitative:

  • Measurable outcomes such as catcher pop-time (time), throwing velocity (MPH) and bat exit velocity (MPH).

Qualitative:

  • Subjective outcomes based on an evaluator’s opinion of an athlete’s ability.
  • Examples: Fielding mechanics, fielding range, pitching command, and hitting contact ability.
  • Scored using the MLB 20-80 scale.

Beyond skills and performance, evaluators and coaching staff will evaluate an athlete’s character and fit within our team environment. Coachability, attitude, effort, hustle, and the ability to be a positive, supportive teammate are essential qualities we value throughout the evaluation process.

Team Selection

Final rosters will be formed by the Team Selection Committee based on the outcomes of the evaluation process. The Team Selection Committee consists of each team’s coaching staff and the Expos Technical Director.
